Where did those tea-baggers go?

Remember a few weeks ago when Republicans across the country had Tea Parties? They “tea-bagged” for lower taxes? (I deserve huge props, by the way, for not making the obvious and highly inappropriate “tea-bagger” joke.) TEA: Taxed Enough Already.

A lot of those tea-baggers hailed from my home county of Gwinnett, one of the most Republican counties in one of the most Republican states in the country. It doesn’t get much more red than Gwinnett. Which is why I find it hilarious that Gwinnett’s Republican government wants to raise property taxes by more than 25%. Ha!

According to Georgia state law, in order for the Gwinnett County Commission to go through with this raise, they need to hold three public hearings before the vote. Their brilliant way of getting around this little hurdle was to hold 2 of those 3 meetings on Tuesday May 26, the day after Memorial Day weekend, a day when very few people would be able to attend because hey, some of us have real jobs. For once I agree with state Senator Balfour (R-Snellville), who feels that the meetings weren’t exactly held in the spirit of things.

Balfour, along with several Gwinnett residents, has voiced the opinion that the commissioners can kiss their jobs goodbye if they pass this tax increase. Again: Ha!

The next meeting regarding these tax increases is to be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday June 2. They may need crowd control to keep all the upset Gwinnettians in check.

Personally, I’m not all that upset at the tax increases. After all, I’m a liberal, so I obviously love high taxes (plus I don’t own property in Gwinnett). What upsets me is not the county’s desire to tax its residents more – though I do find it ridiculous given some previous expenditures – but that the money will not be used for anything that we really need. It will not be used to help our struggling and overcrowded schools, or our congested roads, or our utter lack of public transportation. It will be wasted. Again.

I can’t help but be pleased to see my fellow Gwinnettians rise up in the face of such stupidity. Apparently, even the Last Liberal Gwinnettian can find common ground with the Republicans.
