Guess what this quote is about:

“I don’t think you should get an award for participating. I think you should get an award for exceeding the expectations and winning. I like the idea that the winner and the runner-up get a trophy, but not the people that just showed up and lost. That’s the American system. We award people that succeed and the marketplace punishes those that don’t.” State Sen. John Wiles (R-Kennesaw) (as reported in the Marietta Daily Journal)

That’s right.  Education.

Specifically, the 3-2-1 report card cobb controversy.

He’s talking about schools here.  I don’t like the 3-2-1 Report Cards because its a dumb idea and reduces the amount of specificity in report cards.  But it’s taking it a wee bit far when you start saying that helping people better know how they’re doing at the bottom is against the American Way.  And how the marketplace should punish 1st-3rd graders (the 3-2-1 report card controversy is about expanding it from 2nd to 3rd grade) for not doing well in school.  Hunh?

I’m a little dumbfounded by this one.  This is either bad reporting from the MDJ…or just a really f’ed up comment from a state senator in my county.

Sadly, probably the latter.
